Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have escalated the ongoing Middle East conflict, claiming responsibility for missile and drone attacks on Israel, sparking fears of the war spreading beyond its current fronts. The group, which had largely remained on the sidelines, struck multiple “vital and military sites” in Israel on Saturday, signaling a new phase in a conflict that has already sent ripples across the region.
The Houthis’ involvement adds another layer of complexity to the already tense situation. Earlier in the month, they had targeted shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in support of Palestinians, forcing companies to reroute vessels. With Israel’s recent war in Gaza and the strategic importance of Red Sea trade routes, their participation marks a significant shift. Saudi Arabia, wary of the growing instability, has redirected much of its oil exports to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran claims to have closed to hostile nations.
The violence has not been limited to Israel. Lebanon has remained a flashpoint since Tehran-backed Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in early March. On Saturday, the Israeli military killed three journalists in southern Lebanon, including Ali Shoeib of Al Manar, prompting condemnation from Lebanese authorities, who labeled the killings war crimes. Israeli raids in southern Lebanon also reportedly claimed the lives of nine paramedics, further fueling tensions.
Meanwhile, Israel intensified attacks inside Iran, targeting the headquarters of the Marine Industries Organisation in Tehran, which develops naval weaponry. Explosions rocked the Iranian capital over the weekend, as military operations against Iran’s defense infrastructure continue. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned of potential strikes on U.S. university campuses in the Middle East unless Washington condemned attacks on Iranian institutions, highlighting how the conflict is spilling into broader regional and international arenas.
Amid the fighting, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation. Pakistan is hosting talks between foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt, while Germany has pushed for a direct U.S.-Iran meeting in Islamabad. Washington is reportedly considering a 15-point plan to de-escalate tensions, though U.S. military assets, including the USS Tripoli with thousands of Marines, remain positioned in the region amid speculation of possible ground operations in Iran.
The conflict is already taking a severe economic and humanitarian toll. Shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted, and Gulf ports have been forced to reroute traffic. Drone and missile attacks have caused fires and injuries in Abu Dhabi, with significant damage reported in industrial zones. Airports in Kuwait and Erbil have also suffered strikes, while a drone attack on the Kurdish leader’s residence in Iraq drew condemnation from the United States, which blamed Iranian militia proxies.
As the situation unfolds, the region faces a precarious balance, with escalating military actions, disrupted trade, and intensified diplomacy all intersecting in a conflict that shows few signs of slowing down.
