The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially designated Monday, December 22, 2025, as the beginning of the month of Rajab 1447 AH.
The announcement, which was detailed in a statement released on Saturday by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, followed a nationwide effort to observe the new crescent. According to the findings of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs and the National Moon Sighting Committee, no credible reports of the moon being sighted were received on Saturday, December 20, which marked the 29th day of Jumada Assaniya.
Based on these observations, Sunday, December 21, was concluded as the 30th day of the preceding month. This formal verification ensures that the Islamic community across the country begins the new month in unison. The Sultan encouraged the Muslim Ummah to use this period to pray for the peace and prosperity of the nation.
Rajab holds a place of high importance in the Islamic lunar calendar as the seventh month and one of the four sacred months. It serves as a spiritual gateway that leads into Sha‘ban and eventually the holy month of Ramadan. For many, this month is a vital time for increased devotion, charity, and self-reflection, as believers begin their spiritual preparations for the upcoming season of fasting.
