Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has broken his silence following his late dismissal during Nigeria’s recent international outing, offering a sincere apology for the incident that saw him sent off. The red card occurred during a 2-2 friendly draw against Jordan on March 31, a match held in Turkey that ended on a tense note for the experienced playmaker.
The frustration boiled over when Iwobi reacted to being held back by Jordan’s Amer Jamous, resulting in a confrontation that the referee deemed worthy of a sending-off. Reflecting on the moment during an appearance on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, the Fulham star was quick to admit that his behavior did not meet the standards expected of a senior international.
Iwobi made it clear that he understands the weight of his actions. He noted that he felt a strong need to address what happened and extend his apologies to his teammates, the coaching staff, and the millions of fans who support the national team. He candidly admitted that his actions were simply not good enough and left his team in a difficult position.
Despite the personal setback, the former Everton man is determined to turn the situation into a teaching moment. He pointed out that while the red card was a mistake, he is focused on the positives of the game, noting that the Super Eagles managed to secure a draw rather than a defeat. Moving forward, Iwobi has pledged to learn from the experience and maintain a more composed presence on the pitch for future assignments.
