Eligible Band A electricity customers across Nigeria are set to receive compensation following disruptions in power supply linked to generation challenges on the national grid between February and March 2026.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced the development in a public notice shared on its official social media platforms on Thursday. The regulator explained that the compensation package was approved to address service shortfalls experienced by some customers during the period under review.
According to the commission, widespread generation constraints within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry affected the ability of electricity distribution companies to maintain the minimum service standards promised to Band A consumers during the first quarter of 2026.
To address the situation, NERC said it issued Directive No. NERC/2026/002 on the Special Compensation of Band A Customers Arising from Grid Generation Constraints. The measure is intended to provide relief to customers whose expected power supply levels were not met as a result of circumstances beyond the control of the distribution companies.
The commission noted that the supply challenges were largely driven by inadequate gas availability as well as acts of vandalism targeting critical gas facilities and transmission infrastructure. These factors, it said, significantly reduced power generation and affected electricity delivery across parts of the country.
NERC further clarified that the compensation arrangement specifically covers the period from February to March 2026, when the generation shortfalls were most severe and impacted service commitments to affected Band A customers.
