A major breakthrough has been recorded in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the North-East, as troops attached to Operation Hadin Kai neutralized over fifty terrorists in Borno State. The high-profile casualties include a top Islamic State West Africa Province commander, marking a significant blow to the insurgent group’s leadership structure.
The breakthrough was achieved through a precision airstrike launched around the Kirta and Arina Ciki axes. The targeted aerial bombardment successfully eliminated several high-ranking terrorist commanders, chief among them being Khalifa Umar, a prominent member of the influential ISWAP Shura Council.
This intensified air offensive has drastically altered the dynamics on the ground. Sources familiar with the development told Zoyols News that the pressure from the skies has forced the insurgents to abandon their long-held island enclaves, pushing them toward the mainland where they are increasingly exposed.
Complementing the air raids, ground troops carried out targeted operations within Maiduguri and its immediate outskirts, resulting in the arrest of key collaborative networks. Among those taken into custody are three suspected ISWAP informants and logistics suppliers. In a troubling twist, the military also apprehended a deserting soldier who had fled with his service weapon and was subsequently linked to criminal operations in the zone.
During these operations, security forces recovered an assortment of items crucial to the insurgents’ logistics. The seized materials include an assault rifle loaded with magazines, an operational vehicle, and thirty liters of fuel, alongside other supplies meant to sustain terrorist activities. Furthermore, troops on fighting patrols along the Kukawa axis intercepted and engaged fleeing terrorist scouts, recovering additional ammunition in the process.
The North-East theater has long served as the core of Nigeria’s protracted counter-terrorism campaign. Over the years, Operation Hadin Kai has deployed a mix of coordinated air and ground assaults to flush out ISWAP and JAS fighters from their traditional strongholds across the Sambisa Forest and the broader Lake Chad Basin.
Lately, the military has shifted its strategy to rely heavily on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. By blending real-time data with precision airstrikes, the current approach aims directly at dismantling the command structures, supply routes, and operational mobility of the groups.
Military authorities maintain that this evolving strategy is yielding the desired results by breaking down fortified enemy enclaves into smaller, disorganized cells that are much easier to hunt down. This latest wave of successes underscores a persistent effort to choke off the terrorists’ supply chains and deny them freedom of movement across regional borders. Defense officials have reiterated that these operations will be sustained until the remnants of the terror groups are completely cleared and lasting peace is restored to the region.
