SDP Names Adebayo Early for 2027 Presidential Race

Zoyols News

As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather pace, the Social Democratic Party has taken an early step by officially presenting Prince Adewole Adebayo as its presidential candidate for the next election cycle.

The move places Adebayo among the first major political figures to openly position themselves for the race, signaling the party’s determination to establish an early presence in what is expected to be a fiercely contested election.

Although the submission of a candidate’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission is largely a procedural matter, it has generated interest within political circles. Many observers see it as a clear indication that the SDP intends to begin its preparations well ahead of its rivals.

Adebayo secured the party’s presidential ticket during the SDP national convention and primary election held on May 9, 2026, in Bauchi State. As the sole aspirant in the contest, he received overwhelming backing from delegates and party members who gathered at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium for the exercise.

Following the convention, the party formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission of the outcome. In a letter signed by the National Secretary of the SDP, Dr. Olu Agunloye, the party confirmed Adebayo as its official presidential flag bearer for the 2027 election.

For Adebayo, the development marks another chapter in his national political journey. Having represented the SDP in the 2023 presidential election, his return as the party’s candidate had been widely anticipated, especially after it became clear that no other aspirant would challenge him for the ticket.

The early endorsement also reflects the confidence the party has in his leadership and political vision. By settling its presidential ticket ahead of time, the SDP appears focused on strengthening its political structure and expanding its reach before the campaign season gains full momentum.

With his candidacy now formally confirmed, Adebayo is once again positioned at the centre of the SDP’s ambitions as the party seeks to make a stronger impact on Nigeria’s political landscape in 2027.
