Nollywood actress Faithia Williams has shared an update on the performance of her movie, Efunroye: The Unicorn, just days after raising concerns over what she described as unfair treatment by some cinemas.
Taking to her Instagram page, the actress expressed deep appreciation to everyone who has stood by the project since its release. She thanked fans and supporters for their encouragement and patronage, noting that their support has played a major role in the movie’s journey so far.
According to her, the film has performed admirably despite being released outside the festive season, a period often considered less favorable for cinema attendance. She described the response from viewers as encouraging and urged the public to continue supporting the historical drama while it remains available in cinemas across the country.
Faithia also used the opportunity to pray for her fans and everyone who has contributed to the success of the project. She encouraged movie lovers yet to see the film to visit cinemas and experience what she described as a remarkable production.
Her comments come shortly after she alleged that some cinemas were not giving the movie adequate screening opportunities. The actress claimed that despite audience interest, certain cinema operators reduced the number of showings allocated to the film. She further revealed that some viewers had complained about difficulties finding convenient screening times to watch the movie.
Efunroye: The Unicorn, which debuted in cinemas on May 1, tells the story of Madam Efunroye Tinubu, the influential nineteenth century Yoruba merchant and political figure whose place in Nigerian history continues to spark discussion among historians and the public.
Faithia’s concerns add to a growing conversation within the Nigerian film industry. Actor Rotimi Salami recently appealed for support after revealing that his movie was struggling at the box office. He disclosed that poor ticket sales could lead to the film being withdrawn from cinemas, a situation that left him worried about its future.
Actor IK Ogbonna has also openly criticized what he described as politics and manipulation within Nigeria’s cinema industry. He lamented practices that he believes place filmmakers at a disadvantage despite the significant investments required to produce movies. According to him, creators deserve a fair opportunity to showcase their work and recover the resources committed to their projects.
Ogbonna previously voiced his disappointment when the Christian Association of Nigeria objected to the title of a movie by actress Ini Edo. He questioned why concerns were raised only after months of promotions had already taken place and the project had reached the public.
In a separate statement, the actor maintained that creative professionals should be allowed to exercise their artistic freedom without undue interference. He argued that demanding a title change after a project has already been released does not reflect the principles of fairness, understanding, and compassion often associated with the Christian faith.
