The Economic Community of West African States has officially ushered in a new chapter as Birame Diop took the helm as the President of the ECOWAS Commission during a formal handover ceremony at the organisation’s headquarters in Abuja. Taking charge at a pivotal moment for the sub-region, Diop made an immediate call for unity, pledging to restore internal cohesion and rebuild fractured diplomatic ties following the exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Addressing the gathering, Diop emphasized that while political decisions may split institutions, geography remains unchanged. He noted that ECOWAS shares over 5,000 kilometers of borders with the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States, making close collaboration an unavoidable reality. The new president insisted that both blocs face identical security and economic threats, ranging from terrorism and organized transboundary crime to environmental degradation. He maintained that solidary and concerted action remains the only viable path forward for the benefit of citizens across West Africa.
Looking ahead to the upcoming five-year milestone of Vision 2050, Diop outlined an ambitious roadmap focused on institutional reform, financial sustainability, and citizen engagement. With over 50 regional programs currently designed, he called for innovative funding mechanisms to overcome persistent budget constraints. Beyond policy frameworks, Diop urged member states to embrace tolerance, mutual respect, and patience, highlighting that regional diversity must serve as a source of strength rather than division. He also confirmed that the Commission will actively support Senegal in facilitating a resolution to the ongoing political crisis in Guinea-Bissau.
The outgoing President, Dr. Aliou Omar Touré, concluded his four-year tenure by presenting a detailed account of his administration’s achievements amidst unprecedented geopolitical headwinds. Touré pointed to major infrastructural advancements, including progress on the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline and the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway, alongside significant strides in regional electricity interconnectivity. He also highlighted financial milestones, such as the West Africa Rice Investment Roundtable securing over 1.5 billion dollars in commitments, and reaffirmed that preparations for the regional ECO single currency remain on track for a 2027 launch.
Reflecting on institutional growth, Touré underscored key physical legacy projects, including the completion of the new Chinese-funded ECOWAS Headquarters Complex in Abuja and the inauguration of the regional logistics depot in Sierra Leone. On internal governance, he emphasized that his team prioritized staff welfare by implementing the first comprehensive salary adjustment mechanism since 2009, asserting that no institution can demand excellence from its workforce without treating their well-being as a priority.
Delivering the host nation’s charge, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, called on the incoming leadership to instill strict financial discipline and operational efficiency. Enikanolaiye stressed that ECOWAS must continue to justify the heavy financial investments and sacrifices made by member states. He reminded the new management team that economic integration cannot succeed without regional peace, urging Diop to prioritize security threats while ensuring that community programs deliver direct, measurable benefits to ordinary citizens.
