Nigeria and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors. This came during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, where Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Nigeria, H.E. Anna Westerholm. The Ministry confirmed the discussions in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Ambassador Westerholm praised the goodwill and openness she has experienced in Nigeria and emphasized Sweden’s readiness to intensify engagement across areas of mutual interest. She highlighted trade, investment, and strategic partnerships as central to Sweden’s collaboration with Nigeria. The ambassador particularly pointed to opportunities in supporting Nigeria’s green and digital transition, including cooperation on digital infrastructure, technological innovation, and capacity development.
Sweden’s technology-driven economy positions it as a valuable partner for strengthening Nigeria’s digital connectivity and infrastructure. Beyond tech, Westerholm identified energy and the creative industries as areas ripe for collaboration. She specifically noted Nigeria’s global influence in Afrobeats and creative talent, suggesting that Swedish expertise in music production and business models could complement the country’s dynamic cultural sector.
The ambassador also shared that Sweden recently upgraded its commercial presence in Nigeria with the establishment of a Swedish Trade Office in Lagos, led by a government-appointed Trade Commissioner. This move, following the earlier visit of the Swedish Crown Princess, signals Sweden’s intent to strengthen trade and investment ties with Nigeria.
Minister Tuggar reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and regional cooperation as tools for addressing security and governance challenges in West Africa. He highlighted Nigeria’s active engagement with ECOWAS and regional partners to promote stability, dialogue, and long-term solutions to issues affecting the Sahel and surrounding sub-regions.
Both nations agreed to continue high-level consultations and explore additional avenues for collaboration to further cement their longstanding, mutually beneficial relationship. The State Secretary of Sweden is expected to visit Nigeria next week to continue these strategic discussions.
