Over the past thirty-nine years, Nigeria has successfully deployed more than 10,000 skilled professionals to nations across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, serving as a cornerstone of the nation’s soft power diplomacy.
This milestone was made public by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday. During the media interaction, which detailed the agency’s scorecard and future trajectory, Yakub emphasized that the institution has remained a vital instrument of foreign policy since its establishment in 1987.
These deployed experts—spanning critical sectors such as medicine, education, engineering, agriculture, law, and science and technology—have not only bridged human resource gaps in partner nations but have also risen to prominent leadership positions in foreign universities and legal institutions. The current leadership has anchored its operational vision on a strategic 3-R Agenda focused on repositioning, retooling, and re-engineering the Corps. This aligns closely with President Bola Tinubu’s broader 4-D Foreign Policy framework, which prioritizes democracy, development, demography, and diaspora engagement.
Beyond international postings, the agency has prioritized the welfare of its volunteers, overhauling structures for allowances, field monitoring, and eventual reintegration back home. Yakub noted that true diplomacy extends far beyond formal conference rooms, pointing to everyday impact stories like a Nigerian physician treating patients abroad, an educator inspiring students in a foreign lecture hall, or an engineer solving infrastructure challenges.
Looking ahead, Reports gathered that the Corps is actively expanding South-South cooperation and building structured labour mobility channels. This momentum is highlighted by recent expressions of interest from countries like Jamaica, which is looking to engage hundreds of Nigerian professionals to meet local skills demands, further cementing the nation’s global reputation for excellence.
