President Bola Tinubu has greenlit the recruitment of 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses to serve in hospitals within correctional centers nationwide. This move aims to address a critical shortage of healthcare professionals across these facilities, ensuring that those in state custody have access to essential medical services.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, shared these details during a recent meeting in Abuja with the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris. Tunji-Ojo pointed out the severity of the personnel gap, noting that some facilities, such as the correctional center in Rivers State, previously functioned without a single resident doctor. This is despite the fact that centers like Kuje are equipped with medical tools capable of supporting major surgeries.
The President’s decision is rooted in a commitment to the well-being of all Nigerians, including the inmate population. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that as a leader for everyone, the President has prioritized these improvements, which also include a recent 50 percent increase in feeding allowances for inmates to improve their daily living conditions.
Beyond healthcare, the federal government is focusing on rehabilitation through specialized skill audits. Authorities have been identifying the existing talents of inmates and implementing a “train-the-trainer” model. This approach allows skilled inmates to mentor their peers, with the government providing empowerment and support to graduates of these programs to help them reintegrate into society effectively.
The meeting also touched on broader security achievements, particularly the creation of “mine marshals” within the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. This initiative, a collaboration with the Ministry of Solid Minerals, has led to a noticeable drop in violence and criminal activity within the mining sector, further securing the nation’s critical assets.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris expressed the need for a unified communication strategy to ensure the public remains fully aware of these reforms. He noted that the Ministry of Information is committed to bridging the gap between government actions and public perception, ensuring that the progress made within the nation’s security and correctional architecture is clearly understood by all.
