The long-standing sporting rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana is set to ignite once again, this time inside the boxing ring. As both nations fine-tune their preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Nigerian pugilists are scheduled to face their Ghanaian counterparts in a high-stakes international friendly in Accra.
This bilateral showdown, designed to gauge the readiness of the athletes before they head to the global stage in Glasgow, will take place on Thursday, May 7, at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Nigerian contingent is expected to depart for Accra on Tuesday to allow the team enough time to settle in before the bouts begin.
To align with the official requirements of the Commonwealth Games, the friendly will feature seven male boxers across various weight categories. The female team is also well-represented, with three athletes set to compete in the 54kg, 57kg, and 71kg divisions. This selection ensures that both teams are tested under conditions that closely mirror what they will face during the main tournament in Scotland.
Babatunde Laguda, the Chairman of the Nigeria Boxing Federation’s technical committee, has expressed strong support for the initiative. He noted that such international friendlies are far more effective for evaluating the true form and temperament of boxers than internal trials alone. The matches provide a realistic environment for the coaches to spot areas that need improvement before the final push for medals.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland. For the boxers involved, this Accra trip represents a crucial stepping stone in their journey toward continental and global honors. Fans across the region are eagerly anticipating the results of this clash, which promises to showcase some of the best boxing talents Africa has to offer.
