As the 2027 general elections approach, the Nigerian government has drawn a firm line for the international community, cautioning foreign diplomatic missions against making unguarded statements or offering unsolicited lectures on democratic practices.
Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered this clear message during a briefing with members of the Diplomatic Corps held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. Speaking to the assembled envoys, she emphasized that while Nigeria deeply values its international partnerships, any commentary regarding the nation’s internal political landscape must remain respectful of its sovereignty.
Details of the address, through the minister’s media aide, Magnus Eze, highlight the country’s pivotal role on the continent. Describing Nigeria as the largest democracy in Africa, the minister pointed out that the nation’s political trajectory carries significant weight not just locally, but across the entire West African region and beyond. Because of these far-reaching implications, she noted that the federal government expects foreign missions to exercise restraint and channel observations through proper diplomatic frameworks rather than public criticisms.
Despite the firm stance, the minister took the opportunity to reaffirm President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that the upcoming electoral process is transparent, credible, and free. She stressed that the administration welcomes constructive partnership rather than external posturing.
To streamline future interactions, the foreign affairs ministry also reminded the diplomatic community to route all official communications intended for the presidency, ministries, government agencies, and other state institutions directly through the ministry. According to the minister, this protocol is designed to ensure smooth coordination and facilitate meaningful engagement, rather than serve as a barrier to diplomatic relations.
