Fame can be dazzling, relentless, and fleeting. Yet for some of Nigeria’s biggest stars, a quieter calling has taken centre stage. Away from the glare of spotlights, applause, and red carpets, they have discovered purpose not in their next movie, concert, or match, but in faith. These celebrities have embraced spirituality as a path to meaning and service, redefining what it means to live fully in the public eye.
Across Nollywood, music, and sports, a growing number of household names are openly sharing their spiritual journeys. Their turn to faith is not a retreat from fame but a reorientation, a way to channel influence and creativity toward higher purpose.
Eucharia Anunobi, once one of Nollywood’s most glamorous stars, is a striking example. Known for her bold roles in Glamour Girls and Abuja Connection, she stepped into the public eye with charisma and style. In 2011, she announced her ordination as an evangelist under the Fresh Oil Ministry. Today, she uses her platform to share messages of forgiveness, transformation, and grace, counseling youths and spreading the gospel wherever she travels.
Though less active in acting than she was in the 1990s and early 2000s, Anunobi insists that her spiritual calling does not conflict with her career. “Being a minister does not stop you from working. Since I started acting, I have never taken a break,” she said. She emphasizes that her ultimate goal is to be remembered not for magazine covers or fashion statements but for guiding people toward God. “The work that will be rewarded by God is that of soul-winning. Why waste my fame, money, life, face, time, and speaking ability on things that will never be rewarded?” she added.
Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor, famously known as ‘Mama G,’ also embraced faith in a transformative way. After a 30-day fast and a profound spiritual encounter, she publicly declared herself born again. Although she continues to act, she now prioritizes preaching and chooses film roles that align with her beliefs. “I am here to win souls for Jesus and carry out my Father’s work,” she stated.
Nollywood veteran Zack Orji, recognized for his calm and approachable screen presence, similarly found his calling in ministry. Ordained by Bishop Lawrence Osagie of Power Line Bible Church, Orji now preaches across Nigeria and abroad. He views acting and ministry as complementary, using his celebrity platform to reach and inspire people spiritually.
Liz Benson, a prominent actress of the 1990s, shifted her focus entirely to faith. After stepping away from acting at the height of her fame, she returned not to the screen but to the pulpit. Together with her husband, Bishop Great Ameye, she runs a ministry in Delta State dedicated to family and spiritual growth.
Among younger Nollywood stars, Jimmy Odukoya exemplifies a modern blend of faith and charisma. As Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church and son of the late Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, he combines a contemporary image with deep spiritual leadership. His presence and style resonate particularly with younger audiences, showing that faith can be vibrant and relatable.
Pat Attah, once a leading man in early-2000s Nollywood, relocated to Germany and devoted himself to ministry and gospel music. Like others, he did not abandon fame but redirected his energy toward spiritual influence.
The music industry has seen a similar transformation. Former R&B star Banky W (Bankole Wellington) now pastors at Lagos’ Waterbrook Church, teaching about purpose, grace, and self-discovery alongside his music and political endeavors. His faith journey has guided him through personal challenges, including a battle with cancer, and even shaped his marriage to Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi.
Chidinma Ekile, the 2010 Project Fame winner and Kedike crooner, also surprised fans when she left mainstream Afropop in 2021 to pursue gospel music. Signing with EeZee Conceptz, she declared that her true calling lies in worship. Her music now reflects faith and purpose, a departure from the love-themed hits that first brought her fame.
For these musicians and actors alike, faith has not silenced creativity. Instead, it has deepened it, giving their work new meaning. Their platforms remain, but the message has evolved, reflecting a journey of personal growth, service, and spiritual fulfillment.
