Australian authorities have arrested a dual Australian-Nigerian national, Foluso Omole, over an alleged $5 million fraud involving the country’s disability support scheme.
The 38-year-old was picked up by the Australian Federal Police at Adelaide Airport last Friday as he tried to leave the country. He appeared in court on Monday, where his bail application was denied because the magistrate ruled he was a flight risk.
Prosecutors alleged Omole had sent large sums of money to Nigeria and bought a one-way ticket before his arrest. They claimed he used details obtained from a National Disability Insurance Agency staff member over six years to submit fraudulent claims through two businesses he operated.
Omole’s lawyer denied he was trying to flee to Nigeria, saying his client had bought a return ticket to London. A female staff member mentioned in the case is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
