A tragic dispute over a romantic relationship has led to the death of a 40-year-old Nigerian man, Emeka Christian, in the Pisoli area of Pune, India. Local authorities have arrested two Nigerian nationals, while a manhunt is underway for a third suspect involved in the fatal altercation.
The incident occurred during a late-night dinner gathering at the home of a Nigerian woman. The evening took a violent turn when an argument broke out among the group. Investigators believe the friction started because the victim, Emeka, reportedly disapproved of a romantic relationship between the woman and one of the suspects. What began as a verbal disagreement escalated into a physical assault around 3:00 a.m. on Monday.
During the fight, Emeka was allegedly beaten and struck with a blunt object. Gift Utah, the Vice President of the Nigerian Students Union in Pune, rushed him to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he died while receiving treatment. Senior police officials confirmed that the victim was a legitimate resident of India, working in the garment trading business with a visa valid until 2027.
The Indian police have registered a case of murder and common intent under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The two men currently in custody are also said to be involved in the clothing trade. While the investigation continues, the local Nigerian community is in shock over the loss of one of their own under such avoidable circumstances.
