Nigeria has recorded another outstanding academic achievement on the global stage as its student representatives claimed the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.
The victorious team comprised Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi and Maryam Yusuf. They impressed judges with exceptional performances, finishing ahead of competing teams from Asia, Africa, the United States, China and Canada during the championship, which took place from July 14 to July 19.
The international competition also attracted participants from several African countries, including Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe, making Nigeria’s triumph even more remarkable.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the achievement in a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Sunday, celebrating the students for bringing home the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category.
Before the competition began, the organisers had expressed strong confidence in the team, describing the students as brilliant, articulate and exceptional. They believed the young scholars had everything it takes to represent Nigeria proudly on the world stage.
Following the victory, the organisers praised the team’s dedication, resilience and commitment to excellence, describing the achievement as a major milestone for Nigerian education. They also revealed that the students earned their place at the global championship after excelling at the Nigeria Spelling Bee and later qualifying through the African Spelling Bee Championship held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Ar-Raheem International College also celebrated the historic feat on its official Facebook page, announcing that two of its students were among the four members of Team Nigeria that secured the coveted gold medal at the prestigious international competition.
