Nigeria’s Creator Economy: The Multi-Billion Naira Shift

Zoyols Blog

Nigeria’s creator economy is no longer just a buzzword or a distant dream; it is rapidly transforming into a multi-billion naira industry. In a feat that seemed almost impossible a few years ago, four local startups collectively funneled over N15 billion into the pockets of creators over the past year. Leading the charge is Selar, a decade-old platform that has become a powerhouse in the space, paying out a staggering N14 billion in 2025 alone to its nearly 400,000 registered users.

However, the landscape is becoming increasingly crowded as new players enter the field. Nestuge, which only launched in 2023, managed to pay out ₦1.7 billion last year, hosting thousands of creators who sell everything from e-books to specialized digital courses. Other platforms like Youfanly and AllAccessFans are also carving out significant niches, with payouts of N450 million and N1.9 billion respectively. These figures prove that the sector has moved past the aspirational phase and is showing real signs of long-term durability.

Douglas Kendyson, the CEO of Selar, believes two major shifts triggered this explosion. First, the global pandemic forced people to find alternative income streams online habits that stuck even after life returned to normal. Second, the success of early digital pioneers stripped away the skepticism that once surrounded the “info-marketing” world. By being transparent about earnings and focusing on professional creators, platforms have built a level of trust that simply didn’t exist five years ago. This is evident in Selar’s own journey, growing from a N435 million payout in 2021 to the massive 14-billion-naira mark today.

The rise of competition is being welcomed as a sign of market maturity. Kendyson compares the current state of the creator economy to the early days of fintech in Nigeria, where the presence of multiple big players actually made consumers more comfortable with online transactions. Nestuge’s CEO, Nelson Eze, shares this optimism, noting that seeing others succeed gave his team the confidence to aim higher. Despite this growth, Eze remains realistic, noting that the market is still in its early stages. He points out that no Nigerian platform in this niche has yet crossed the million-dollar annual revenue mark, suggesting that the “ceiling” of this industry is still far out of reach.

As the battle for creator loyalty intensifies, the focus is shifting from simple payment processing to the overall user experience. Creators are becoming more selective, often switching platforms to find better support or fairer deals. One of the biggest hurdles remaining is “discovery” helping experts with small followings find an audience. While most platforms currently help creators monetize their existing fans, Nestuge is experimenting with discovery features and community-building tools like “Hubs” to create more sustainable, membership-based income.

The future of Nigeria’s digital economy looks increasingly tied to these platforms. While it is too early to tell which companies will ultimately dominate, the trend is clear: creators are earning life-changing money, and Nigerian consumers are finally embracing the value of digital products. For anyone with expertise to share, the infrastructure to turn that knowledge into a business has never been more robust.
