The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is stepping up its efforts to lead the country toward a cleaner and more sustainable maritime future. In a recent move to align with global environmental standards, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing the necessary regulatory oversight and technical coordination to drive a National Action Plan on maritime decarbonization. This initiative is designed to ensure that Nigeria’s shipping industry is not left behind in the global shift toward greener energy.
During a recent stakeholders’ workshop focused on the development of this plan, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized that the meeting was a vital step in realizing the federal government’s goals for both the blue economy and climate change. Speaking through the Executive Director of Operations, Engr. Fatai Adeyemi, he noted that the project is part of a broader international cooperation known as IMO GreenVoyage2050. This initiative specifically helps developing nations implement strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.
The National Action Plan will be tailored to suit Nigeria’s unique economic realities. It aims to build on existing local strengths while identifying and fixing gaps in the current system. The goal is to create a framework that doesn’t just meet international rules but also supports the country’s specific environmental and economic priorities.
Dr. Mobereola pointed out that this transition is about much more than just following global orders. He explained that the move is essential for protecting the marine environment and public health. By cleaning up the industry, NIMASA hopes to strengthen the blue economy and make sure that the Nigerian maritime sector stays competitive and ready for the challenges of the future.
Supporting this vision, Astrid Dispert, the Technical Manager of the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project, highlighted the importance of having a globally aligned regulatory framework. She noted that the initiative is designed to speed up the process of decarbonization across the world. She also praised the pivotal role that NIMASA is playing in making sure these global goals are translated into real action at the national level.
As the industry moves forward, the focus remains on ensuring that these environmental changes go hand-in-hand with economic growth, keeping Nigeria at the forefront of maritime innovation in Africa.
