Nollywood stars get free health checks in Abuja as AGN promotes wellness

The Actors Guild of Nigeria recently took a significant step toward improving the well-being of its members by hosting a comprehensive health outreach program in the Federal Capital Territory. The initiative, tagged the 2026 “AGN Health Campaign and Walk for Life,” saw Nollywood stars and industry stakeholders gather to prioritize their physical fitness and medical awareness.

The event commenced with an energetic walk starting from the Gudu District, with participants marching through major roads supported by officials from the Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps. The procession eventually concluded at the guild’s national secretariat in Gaduwa Estate, where a makeshift medical center was established to provide a wide range of free clinical services.

Participants had access to essential screenings, including checks for blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, malaria, and hepatitis B and C. The medical team also provided HIV/AIDS testing and professional eye examinations, alongside the distribution of free prescription glasses and necessary medications to those in need.

During the exercise, the AGN FCT Mayor, Ambassador Mercy Salma Aminu, spoke on the vital importance of actors adopting a proactive approach to their health. She noted that the annual campaign serves as a necessary reminder for entertainers to undergo regular checkups, rather than waiting for a crisis to occur. Aminu emphasized that beyond the walk, the guild has integrated health lectures and a robust Health Insurance Scheme to ensure that members have a safety net for their long-term medical needs.

The National President of the AGN, Abubakar Yakubu, further highlighted the grueling nature of the filmmaking profession. He pointed out that the demanding schedules often leave actors with very little time to focus on self-care, which has contributed to a rise in health challenges within the industry. To combat this, the guild is not only pushing for enrollment in HMO programs but is also introducing a dedicated sports club to encourage consistent physical exercise among its members.

Several high-ranking officials within the guild also lent their voices to the cause. Nazareth Bako Jesse, the Vice President for North-Central, stressed that maintaining good health is a fundamental requirement for staying effective on camera, noting that a healthy actor is a more productive one. Echoing this sentiment, the Director of Communication for the FCT chapter, Drew Odoh, described the project as a laudable investment in the lives of thespians, underscoring the leadership’s commitment to ensuring that those who entertain the nation are themselves in peak physical condition.
