NSITF Warns of Risk to Nigeria’s Future Over Wasted Youth Potential

Zoyols News

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has issued a stirring call to action regarding the state of the nation’s youth, warning that failing to harness their potential poses a significant risk to the country’s future. During the Student Mentorship Summit 2026 held in Abuja, the agency characterized the current situation as a waste of human capital that Nigeria can ill afford.

Speaking at the event organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Managing Director of the NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, made it clear that the country’s true wealth lies far beyond its natural resources. Represented by his Technical Assistant, Dr. Dayo Alao, Faleye noted that while oil and infrastructure are important, the energy and innovation of young Nigerians remain the nation’s most valuable assets. The fund believes that talent alone is insufficient without the right guidance, protection, and structural support.

The summit, which focused on leadership across sectors like technology, aviation, and security, served as a bridge between the youth and global opportunities. Faleye used the platform to urge a fundamental shift in mindset, encouraging young people to move away from a culture of dependency. He emphasized the need for a transition from job seekers to job creators, noting that the focus should shift from merely acquiring certificates to solving real-world problems through innovation.

Linking youth empowerment directly to national security, the NSITF boss explained that a well-protected and empowered workforce is the primary driver of development. He clarified that the agency’s role extends beyond providing compensation; it is deeply rooted in ensuring workplace safety and expanding social protections that allow young professionals to thrive. He warned that the prosperous Nigeria many dream of will not appear by chance but must be intentionally designed and sustained through the deliberate empowerment of the younger generation.

The event, held at Merit House in Maitama, also saw the student body recognize Faleye’s commitment to social protection with a special award. Earlier in the program, NANS National Publicity Secretary, Samson Ajasa, highlighted that the summit was designed to equip students with practical mentorship and the skills needed to lead in various industries. With heads of ministries and industry captains in attendance, the gathering underscored the growing consensus that youth development is no longer just a social issue but a top national priority.
