With the 2027 general elections already beginning to stir the political atmosphere, the landscape is shifting as lawmakers solidify their positions. Harris Okonkwo, who represents the Idemili North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, recently signaled a major move toward the African Democratic Congress. During a medical outreach program hosted by the Annie Okonkwo Foundation in Ojoto, Okonkwo made his intentions clear, expressing his full commitment to seeing former Anambra State governor Peter Obi secure the presidential ticket under the ADC banner.
Okonkwo, who transitioned from the Labour Party to the ADC, told Reports that he is prepared to rally his supporters to ensure this objective is met. He emphasized that the era of relying solely on delegates is fading, noting that future primaries are likely to lean toward consensus or direct participation. By shifting the power to the people, he believes voters will have a much more significant voice in determining the next presidential candidate.
However, the lawmaker did not shy away from voicing his frustrations with the recently amended Electoral Act. He argued that certain provisions within the legislation represent an overreach that stifles the fundamental right to freedom of association. Despite his vocal opposition during debates in the House, Okonkwo noted that his side ultimately lacked the numbers to sway the majority. He remains firm in the belief that an individual’s political support should not be restricted by party lines. In his view, a citizen should be free to belong to one party while actively supporting a candidate in another, without fear of legal or political repercussions.
Beyond the internal politics of party affiliation, Okonkwo turned his attention to the broader state of the nation. He expressed deep concern over the current management of national resources, highlighting what he sees as excessive extravagance in government spending. He warned that such behavior comes at a steep cost to the average Nigerian, whose welfare should be the primary focus of leadership. For Okonkwo, the path forward must prioritize accountability and the tangible well-being of the populace, even as the political maneuvering for 2027 continues to intensify.
