The debate surrounding the proposed creation of Anioma State has taken a sharper turn as former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, openly criticized Senator Ned Nwoko for what he described as misleading the public. In a rare public commentary on the issue, Okowa questioned the feasibility of the current push for state creation, pointing out that the legislative calendar makes such a major move highly unlikely at this stage.
According to a video of his address to stakeholders in Oshimili South, which was recently reviewed by Zoyols News, Okowa emphasized that creating a new state must be a product of collective agreement rather than individual ambition. He warned that stirring up expectations without a realistic timeline or a clear consensus between the people and the government amounts to a disservice to the community.
Okowa was quick to dismiss rumors that he is personally opposed to the Anioma State project. He stated firmly that no true son of the soil would be against such a development. However, he insisted that the Anioma State being advocated for must consist of the nine local government areas in Delta North and must remain within the South-South geopolitical zone, with Asaba maintaining its status as the capital.
The former governor expressed concern over suggestions that could undermine Asaba’s position. He reminded stakeholders of the historic efforts made to establish Asaba as a headquarters, noting that its rapid growth is a blessing that should not be jeopardized by misguided proposals. He argued that anyone ignoring the significance of the current capital is out of touch with the reality of the people’s wishes.
Highlighting the procedural hurdles, Okowa pointed out that with the current parliamentary schedule, discussing state creation now is strategically flawed. He stressed that a project of this magnitude requires a unified voice from the Anioma people and the sitting administration. Per his remarks shared with Zoyols News, the former governor believes that while the dream of Anioma State is valid, it will only become a reality through proper consultation and when the timing is right for all parties involved.
