Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed members of his newly inaugurated cabinet to visibly show their loyalty to President Bola Tinubu by wearing attire featuring the president’s insignia. The instruction came during Tuesday’s swearing-in of new commissioners and the inauguration of several boards and commissions in Benin City.
Acknowledging Tinubu’s support in his rise to the governorship, Okpebholo stressed that loyalty to the president must be expressed beyond words. “This could not have happened without a responsible president. Today, we say thank you,” he said. He added a firm warning: “I will not forgive any commissioner who is not wearing this cap. At exco meetings, if you come without a suit and this Asiwaju cap, you will be sent back.”
The governor also reminded his appointees that their roles are not political rewards but opportunities to serve the people of Edo State with integrity. “You have been carefully screened and confirmed purely on merit. Your appointment is not for personal gain, but a call to serve Edo people,” he said.
Okpebholo emphasised that his administration prioritises practical governance and measurable outcomes over rhetoric. “While I congratulate you on your elevation, your appointment is for service, sacrifice, and improving the lives of Edo people, not for enrichment,” he stated.
He further urged commissioners to embrace teamwork, discipline, and integrity, underscoring the administration’s zero tolerance for corruption. “Your success will be judged by the impact you make in delivering services and opportunities to our people. Loyalty to Edo State is paramount. History will judge us by our actions, not intentions,” the governor said.
The swearing-in ceremony was witnessed by dignitaries including the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, among others.
