Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to view environmental protection and sanitation not just as government policies, but as a collective societal duty.
In a message released from Abuja on Monday to mark the International Day of Clean Energy 2026, the First Lady highlighted the critical need for a nationwide shift toward sustainable living. This year’s global observance, held under the theme “Clean Energy for People and Planet,” serves as a poignant reminder that every Nigerian has a role to play in safeguarding the natural resources of the country for future generations.
Senator Tinubu emphasized that adopting renewable energy and green technologies is no longer a luxury but a fundamental necessity for survival and public health. She noted that environmental stewardship is the bedrock of a healthy society, urging individuals and organizations alike to champion the transition away from polluting energy sources.
“I urge us all to embrace renewable energy and sustainable technologies as an essential foundation for survival, healthy living, and environmental stewardship,” she stated. She further called for a unified front in building a greener and more resilient planet that benefits every citizen.
The International Day of Clean Energy, observed annually on January 26, was established by the United Nations General Assembly to drive awareness and mobilize global action toward a fair and inclusive energy transition. The day also commemorates the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and highlights the urgent need to expand energy access while reducing carbon emissions.
By making environmental care a personal priority, the First Lady believes Nigerians can significantly improve their quality of life and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
