A prominent political support group dedicated to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election has raised an alarm over the current political atmosphere within the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress. The group expresses concern that the approach being taken by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa regarding the upcoming National Assembly primaries could trigger unnecessary tension and deep-seated disunity among party faithful.
In a formal statement released by its convener, Barrister Kayode Mogbojuri, the group known as Save Ondo State alleged that there are ongoing efforts to promote specific individuals as consensus candidates. This move comes at a time when there is still significant uncertainty regarding the number of aspirants who have officially declared interest or obtained nomination forms for the various contests.
The group pointed out that the Electoral Act 2026 is very clear on how a consensus candidate must emerge. The law requires the written consent of every cleared aspirant agreeing to step down for a single person. If even one aspirant refuses to sign off on the arrangement, the consensus path becomes legally invalid. They argued that such an agreement must be entirely voluntary and cannot be forced upon the party by any leader, regardless of their position.
The group further noted that any consensus candidate, once agreed upon, must still face ratification at a properly organized party congress or convention. This process must take place under the watchful eye of the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure everything remains within the boundaries of the law. As noted by Zoyols News, the group warned that bypassing these legal steps could lead to serious repercussions for the party’s future.
There is a growing fear that if these candidate selections are not handled lawfully and transparently, it could weaken the party’s foundation in the state. Such internal friction, they warned, might ultimately hurt President Bola Tinubu’s prospects in Ondo State as the 2027 elections approach.
To avoid a looming crisis, the group is now calling on the national leadership of the APC to step in. They believe urgent intervention is necessary to ensure that the selection process remains fair and that the party remains a united front capable of delivering victory in the upcoming polls.
