From the termite mounds of Benin City to the cutting-edge energy labs of the Permian Basin in Texas, the story of Osayamen Imarhiagbe is a fascinating study in how curiosity can evolve into a global mission for sustainability. His career is far more than a list of academic titles; it is a dedicated search for the secrets hidden within the Earth’s crust, spanning everything from the soil beneath our feet to the records of ancient climates.
Imarhiagbe first made waves in the scientific community with his unique research into the “biological engineers” of Southwestern Nigeria—termites. By studying the soil of anthills, he challenged traditional engineering views, proving that these natural structures possess a mechanical strength far superior to the surrounding earth. This work proposed a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative for road construction, offering a way to save millions in infrastructure costs by reducing the need for expensive chemical stabilizers.
His hunger for knowledge eventually took him from Nigeria to some of the most prestigious institutions in Europe and North America. An alumnus of the University of Benin with degrees in Geology and Mineral Exploration, Imarhiagbe’s path was further paved by a prestigious NDDC Federal Government scholarship. This took him to RWTH Aachen University in Germany for a second Master’s degree, where he shifted his focus to environmental archives, using prehistoric shells to tell the story of the Earth’s past climates.
Currently based in Odessa, Texas, Imarhiagbe is a standout scholar at the University of Texas Permian Basin, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. His current research in palynostratigraphy involves using fossilized remains to map the subsurface of the Permian Basin, a critical task for identifying energy resources in one of the world’s most productive oil and gas regions. Professionally, he serves as an Environmental Scientist at Tetra Tech Inc. in Midland, where he ensures that the infrastructure supporting modern energy production is both safe and stable through rigorous geotechnical testing.
However, Imarhiagbe is not just looking at traditional energy. His participation in the 2025 SEG Evolve program saw him identifying geothermal energy opportunities in Australia’s Cooper Basin, marking a clear shift toward renewable energy solutions. He is also a pioneer in using technology to solve environmental issues, having developed machine learning models that predict groundwater quality with incredible accuracy. This work is a vital contribution to public health, ensuring communities have access to safe, clean water.
Beyond the lab, he is a dedicated mentor. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, he manages laboratory courses for dozens of students, preparing the next generation of geoscientists for the industry. His extensive research portfolio also tackles urgent issues like heavy metal contamination in Nigerian rivers, warning of the risks that toxins like cadmium pose to the food chain and human health.
With affiliations in the Geological Society of America and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Imarhiagbe remains at the forefront of his field.
