Oyebanji Marks Three Years of Purposeful Leadership

Writing about a sitting governor’s anniversary often risks being mistaken for praise-singing, especially when the writer shares the same political platform. Yet, it becomes less of a defense and more of a duty when the truth is evident to all. When citizens themselves acknowledge good governance, the storyteller only needs to echo their voices.

Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has now completed three years as the leader of Ekiti State. Still in his first term, his record so far offers a clear picture of what another term could look like. Judging by the people’s verdict, his leadership has earned wide approval and genuine respect.

Ekiti residents, known for their discerning and honest evaluations, describe him as a high performer. His administration’s achievements touch nearly every sector, with clear results to show for each effort.

Governor Oyebanji has maintained prudent financial management, earning Ekiti consistent top rankings in fiscal responsibility, budget transparency, and civil service reform. His government has strengthened key institutions, including the new Ministry of Works complex in Ado Ekiti, which now stands as a model of structure and efficiency.

On infrastructure, the administration has constructed and rehabilitated hundreds of kilometers of roads across all 16 local government areas. The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport project is another milestone, with the Federal Government approving commercial operations from October 2025. This move is set to open new frontiers in agriculture, trade, and tourism.

Education and youth empowerment have also received notable attention. Over a thousand classrooms have been renovated, and new ones built under the Smart School initiative. The Ekiti Youth Economic Empowerment Programme has trained and funded thousands of young entrepreneurs, creating jobs and reducing dependency.

The health sector has witnessed the revival of primary healthcare facilities and the introduction of mobile clinics in rural areas. Farmers have benefited from improved access to credit, modern tools, and reliable markets, while initiatives like the Ekiti State Food Security Project and Ounje Ekiti retail outlets continue to stabilize food supply and prices.

Efforts to improve electricity and water access have yielded results through the Ilumoba–Ijesa–Isu to Ikole 33kV power line and the rehabilitation of over a hundred boreholes across the state. These projects have made life easier in homes, schools, and health centers.

Under his watch, Ekiti has also remained one of the most peaceful states in the country, a reflection of proactive security measures and collaboration with local communities.

Governor Oyebanji’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. He has received several awards, including the Most Outstanding Governor of the Year for Inclusive Leadership, the Silverbird Man of the Year Award, and the Vanguard Personality of the Year for Good Governance. He was also recognized as Energy Governor of the Year, Governor of the Year by the Nigerian Human Rights Community, and winner of the 2025 Edge Awards Grand Prix for attracting new investments to Ekiti.

Despite these successes, challenges remain. Budget constraints persist as resources struggle to meet the demands of governance. Political opposition and competing interests are natural hurdles in public service, but Oyebanji’s calm and transparent approach continues to win him goodwill and cooperation.

Looking ahead, his focus must remain on sustainable development, renewable energy, education, and active citizen participation in governance. These are not just aspirations—they are the keys to building the Ekiti of tomorrow.

Three years may seem short, but the foundation laid by Governor Oyebanji already speaks volumes. As one of the young men who fought for the creation of Ekiti State, his journey has come full circle. Now, his task is to ensure that the state he helped bring into being continues to grow stronger, fairer, and more united for generations to come.
