Speaking at a high-profile state banquet held at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, the President recounted his experiences as a pro-democracy activist fleeing the atmospheric pressures of military rule.
Addressing an audience that included King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales, the President expressed profound gratitude for the protection he was afforded while facing direct threats from the then-military junta. He recalled a time when his residence was placed under the watchful eye of the Metropolitan Police to ensure his safety from agents of the regime, a memory he says remains deeply etched in his mind.
This period of exile, which spanned from 1993 to 1998 during the administration of Sani Abacha, followed the historic annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. The President described those years as a defining chapter of his political journey, one that eventually paved the way for the democratic Nigeria he leads today. Standing before the British royals as a democratically elected leader, he noted that his presence at the banquet served as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s hard-won political progress.
The visit, aimed at strengthening the long-standing diplomatic and institutional ties between the two nations, also provided an opportunity for the President to highlight the shared values that bind Nigeria and the UK.
