Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos has weighed in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s pursuit of the elusive 1,000-goal milestone, insisting that Pele’s record remains untouchable in football history.
Speaking to OJogo, the Brazilian icon said Pele is still the only player officially recognized to have scored 1,000 career goals. While Carlos believes Ronaldo is on track to join that elite company, he stresses it won’t erase Pele’s legendary mark.
“For anyone who follows Cristiano and football, it’s amazing to see him continue breaking records,” Carlos told World Soccer Talk. “The only player who ever scored 1,000 goals was Pele, but Cristiano could join that group. He looks happy and confident in the Saudi league. I’m sure he’ll reach it. He never gets injured, keeps performing at the top level, and is a role model for young players. Portugal should be proud.”
Carlos also encouraged Ronaldo to keep playing, insisting the five-time Ballon d’Or winner still has plenty to give. “Cristiano can’t stop, ever. If he does, I’ll call him and tell him not to. Even if he had to play on one leg or crawl, he should keep going. He inspires every young player who dreams of greatness.”
Ronaldo currently sits at 961 career goals and continues his chase with Al Nassr, despite missing the club’s last three matches. Carlos remains confident that the Portuguese star will eventually reach the historic milestone.
