Omoyele Sowore, the standard-bearer for the African Action Congress in the upcoming 2027 presidential race, has declared that he will completely scrap the Office of the First Lady if he wins the election, dismissing the role as an unnecessary drain on public funds.
Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Tonight, the activist-turned-politician pointed out that the position holds no legal backing under the Nigerian Constitution. While making it clear that his stance would have no bearing on his marriage, he insisted that taxpayer money should not be channeled into funding an unofficial parallel office.
Sowore maintained that sidelining the office does not mean women will be ignored under his leadership. Instead, he promised that female voices will find meaningful representation in his administration, just without the financial baggage and institutional weight traditionally tied to the office.
He stressed that resources spent maintaining the role are better redirected toward tangible national progress and developmental projects. For him, drawing a firm line against unconstitutional offices is a matter of strict policy rather than mere rhetoric, setting the tone for what a potential Sowore presidency would look like.
