Stock Market for All: Safaricom and NSE Launch Ziidi Trader on M-PESA

Zoyols Blog

In a landmark partnership that promises to change the face of retail investing in Kenya, Safaricom and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) have officially rolled out Ziidi Trader. This new digital feature allows millions of mobile users to trade shares directly through the M-PESA app, effectively bringing the stock market to the fingertips of the average citizen.

By integrating the local capital market into the massive M-PESA ecosystem, Safaricom is significantly lowering the hurdles that once kept everyday people from investing. This move is designed to democratize wealth creation, giving users the power to buy and sell listed shares and corporate bonds with just a few taps on their smartphones. It marks an ambitious expansion for the Ziidi Investment Platform, which began with savings options like Ziidi MMF and inclusive, Shariah-compliant tools before moving into active market participation.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa described the launch as a powerful step toward financial empowerment. He noted that for nearly two decades, M-PESA has reshaped how Kenyans handle their daily finances, and this latest collaboration with the NSE extends that mission to long-term wealth building. The platform isn’t just about accessibility; it’s also about security. Ziidi Trader operates under the strict oversight of the Capital Markets Authority, ensuring that investor protection and transparency remain top priorities.

One of the most impressive aspects of the new service is how simplified the process has become. Interested investors can find the service under the “Financial Services” tab within the M-PESA app. The entry requirements are intentionally low to encourage participation, allowing anyone who accepts the terms and conditions to start their investment journey with as little as a single share.

Beyond the technical ability to trade, Ziidi Trader is also being positioned as an educational tool. The platform provides market insights and portfolio monitoring features to help users make informed decisions. Frank Mwiti, the CEO of the Nairobi Securities Exchange, emphasized that this partnership is crucial for bringing the stock market closer to “everyday Kenyans,” whether they are living at home or in the diaspora.

By combining Safaricom’s robust technology with the NSE’s deep market expertise, Ziidi Trader offers a secure environment for diversifying financial portfolios. Whether it’s stocks or corporate bonds, the goal is to create a more inclusive financial future where the tools for building wealth are no longer reserved for a privileged few but are accessible to anyone with a mobile phone.
