Tanzania’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died.
He passed away on Monday morning while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death and said funeral arrangements are ongoing in Kizimkazi.
Ameir, an agricultural academic, kept a low public profile throughout his wife’s political career. He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when Samia assumed office in 2021 after the death of President John Magufuli.
President Samia and Ameir were married in 1978 and had four children. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, currently serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
Kenyan President William Ruto described the death as a loss of a lifelong companion and a distinguished son of Tanzania.
