Nigerian music star and Grammy winner Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has reached another remarkable milestone by becoming the first African female artiste to earn a Diamond certified single in the United States.
The historic achievement comes through Wait For U, her hit collaboration with American rapper Future and Canadian superstar Drake. The song has now surpassed 10 million certified units in the United States, qualifying it for the prestigious Diamond certification awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America.
According to global music tracking platform Chart Data, the chart topping single has exceeded 11 million certified units in the US. The platform announced the latest certification on its official X account, confirming that Wait For U has officially reached 11 times Platinum status.
With the accomplishment, Tems joins fellow Nigerian superstar Wizkid as the only African artistes to receive a Diamond certified single in the United States. Wizkid achieved the milestone earlier through his collaboration with Drake on the global hit One Dance.
The latest recognition further cements Tems’ place among Africa’s biggest musical exports and highlights the growing global appeal of Nigerian music.
Since breaking onto the international scene, the Love Is a Kingdom singer has continued to expand her influence with her unique sound, soulful vocals and exceptional songwriting abilities. Her success has earned her multiple Grammy Awards, alongside several nominations and collaborations with some of the world’s leading music stars.
Fans across social media have celebrated the achievement, describing it as another proud moment for Nigeria and the African music industry.
Many believe the milestone reflects the continued rise of Afrobeats on the global stage and the increasing impact Nigerian artistes are making across the international music scene.
