When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Anambra State back in May 2025, he made a promise that immediately caught the attention of the entire South-East. Pointing out that the region sits on massive gas reserves yet somehow managed to stay sidelined in the national gas masterplan, he gave his word that things were about to change. For a long time, energy access has been the missing puzzle piece for industrial growth in Nigeria. History teaches us that true economic transformation—much like the industrial revolutions of the past—needs reliable power to wake up dormant factories and fuel urban expansion. What started as an official declaration in Anambra has now moved swiftly from rhetoric to tangible reality.
That vision reached a major milestone in Enugu with the launch of the South East Gas Distribution Pipeline Infrastructure Project, championed by the South East Development Commission through its commercial arm, the South East Investment Company. According to the News, the commission has managed to avoid the red tape and stagnation that usually bog down similar regional bodies, opting instead for a results-driven roadmap. Powered by private capital and built alongside strategic partners like Gas Sync and NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, the ambitious project centers on a 400-kilometre pipeline network designed to close the region’s gas distribution deficit.
The new infrastructure ties directly into major heavyweights like the ANOH Gas Processing Plant in Imo State and the OB3 trunkline. By doing so, it creates a direct energy highway that feeds natural gas straight into key industrial and commercial clusters spanning Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. For manufacturing powerhouses in places like Nnewi, Onitsha, and Aba, this shift means regional resources will finally power local businesses rather than just leaving the area. News gathered that the commission has already locked down three million dollars in foundational capital alongside more than 150 corporate off-takers lined up to tap into the network right upon completion.
This rapid progress has not gone unnoticed by local leadership. Speaking at the launch event, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah pointed out that the administration has consistently kept its word to the region through high-impact infrastructure. He stressed that recognizing and backing such leadership is essential for sustaining the momentum. At the end of the day, a leader’s true test lies in the durable structures they leave behind and the economic barriers they manage to break down. By pushing this gas project from the drawing board to actual construction, President Tinubu is weaving the South-East deeper into the nation’s economic framework, paving the way for a long-awaited industrial renaissance.
