Commuters traveling inward Lagos along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway were met with significant delays this Wednesday morning following a major traffic incident on the Otedola Bridge. A heavy-duty Mack truck, which had initially developed a mechanical fault, overturned during an attempted recovery operation around 7:00 a.m., spilling its load of two 20-foot containers across the carriageway.
The accident effectively paralyzed the flow of vehicles, with the fallen containers obstructing nearly 90 percent of the road and leaving only a single lane available for passage. According to reports gathered by Reports, the resulting bottleneck caused traffic to back up significantly, stretching well beyond the Kara Bridge and leaving many motorists stranded during the morning rush.
In response to the chaos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed rescue and recovery teams to the scene. High-capacity towing equipment and cranes were mobilized to clear the wreckage and restore order to the expressway. Traffic officials have been working on the ground to manage the gridlock, but the sheer size of the obstruction has made the recovery process a slow and complex task.
Travelers were earlier advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the area, as the spill continued to hamper movement throughout the morning. While authorities work toward a full reopening of the bridge, motorists are encouraged to remain patient and follow the directives of traffic officers on site to help ease the pressure on this critical corridor.
