UK and Ukraine Poised to Sign Defence Pact on Drone Threats

Britain and Ukraine are set to formalize a defence partnership focused on tackling the rising threat of low-cost drones, Downing Street announced ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to London on Tuesday.

The pact comes as conflicts in the Middle East have highlighted the increasing use of drones in modern warfare. While Iran has primarily relied on ballistic missiles in recent attacks on Israel, drones have been a preferred tool for targeting locations across the Gulf.

The agreement aims to combine Ukraine’s battlefield experience in countering drones during its war with Russia and the UK’s industrial and technological capabilities. Together, the two countries plan to develop and supply drones alongside other advanced military technologies.

“Drones, electronic warfare, and rapid battlefield innovation are now central to national and economic security, and the conflict in the Middle East has only underscored their importance,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. “By deepening our defence partnerships, we are enhancing Ukraine’s ability to defend itself while ensuring the UK and our allies are prepared for future threats.”

The deal also includes £500,000 ($670,000) to establish an “AI Centre of Excellence” within the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, designed to bolster technological innovation for battlefield and national security applications.

Zelensky’s visit underscores Ukraine’s need to maintain global attention on its ongoing conflict with Russia, even as international focus has shifted toward the Middle East. European allies, including the UK, have reaffirmed support for Kyiv amid moves by the United States to adjust sanctions on Moscow in response to global oil price pressures.

This partnership signals a new chapter in UK-Ukraine defence cooperation, prioritizing drone countermeasures and forward-looking military technologies in a rapidly evolving security landscape.
