United States special envoy Steve Witkoff is reported to be travelling to Switzerland for diplomatic discussions after planned negotiations between Washington and Tehran were delayed.
According to American media reports, Witkoff departed for the Alpine nation on Friday, with Axios citing a senior US official familiar with the matter. The visit comes at a time when efforts are ongoing to restart technical-level talks aimed at building on an earlier peace framework between both countries.
CNN reported that the discussions are part of attempts by the United States and Iran to get follow up negotiations back on track after the initial schedule was disrupted. The talks are expected to focus on key technical issues tied to a broader settlement process.
Also linked to the diplomatic push is Jared Kushner, who was expected to be in Switzerland for the meetings. While CNN, referencing US officials, indicated his involvement, Axios reported that he had already arrived in the country. It remains unclear whether Witkoff will hold direct meetings with Iranian representatives during the visit.
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance, who was initially expected to attend, has postponed his trip. The White House confirmed the change in plans late Thursday, without providing further details.
The Switzerland talks were originally designed to advance a deal aimed at ending ongoing tensions in the Middle East and laying the groundwork for a more lasting agreement. However, a new date for the postponed negotiations has not yet been announced.
AFP noted that the broader conflict traces back to late February following US Israeli strikes that escalated tensions in the region.
