Nigerian sprinter Godson Oghenebrume has been sentenced to 27 months in a federal prison in the United States after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm while staying in the country on an F 1 student visa.
The sentence was handed down by US Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick, while authorities also confirmed that the athlete could face deportation after serving his jail term.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana said Oghenebrume, a Nigerian national living in Baton Rouge, was convicted for possessing a firearm as an alien admitted into the US under a non immigrant visa.
The statement added that his conviction also makes him liable for removal from the United States once he completes his prison sentence.
Details of the case showed that the incident happened on the night of February 7, 2025, when Oghenebrume was said to be inside his apartment with another young woman before his former girlfriend, who is also the mother of his infant child, arrived at the residence with the baby.
Authorities said Oghenebrume stepped outside and an argument broke out between him and the woman. During the confrontation, and while the baby was present, he allegedly fired the gun.
The statement further explained that after the shooting, Oghenebrume returned to the apartment. His former girlfriend was said to have opened the door shortly after and saw him and the other woman in the living room, which led to another heated argument.
