US Praises Nigeria, Confirms Joint Strike on ISIS Leader

Zoyols News

The United States has reaffirmed its security partnership with Nigeria, highlighting recent joint counterterrorism efforts that led to a major breakthrough against the Islamic State network.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made this known while addressing issues around global security cooperation and ongoing foreign policy engagements.

He revealed that both American and Nigerian security forces recently worked together in an operation that resulted in the elimination of a senior ISIS figure who was operating from within Nigeria. According to him, the mission dealt a significant blow to the group’s international structure.

Rubio explained that concerns earlier raised by some international observers over attacks affecting Christian communities in Nigeria contributed to stronger security collaboration between both nations. He noted that this shared concern has deepened joint efforts aimed at tackling extremist threats.

He further stated that the cooperation has already produced visible results, pointing to the recent operation that targeted and removed what he described as the number two leader of ISIS globally, who was based in the country. He added that such coordinated efforts are ongoing.

The statement reflects an expanding security relationship between Nigeria and the United States, particularly as both countries continue to address terrorism challenges across West Africa and the wider Sahel region.

Nigeria has remained heavily involved in regional counterterrorism campaigns, confronting insurgent groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other extremist networks operating in different parts of the country.

Over the years, the country has also consistently called for stronger international support in addressing terrorism, illegal arms movement, and cross border criminal activities affecting the region.

The latest acknowledgment from the United States comes at a time when global attention is once again focused on insecurity across the Lake Chad Basin and surrounding regions.

Both countries have maintained long standing cooperation in areas including security, peacekeeping, governance, and development, with recent events further reinforcing their shared commitment to regional stability.
