Senator Seriake Dickson has opened up about why he deliberately bypassed the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, following the steady decline of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during an official visit to present him with the notification for the 2026 Politician of the Year award, the former Bayelsa State governor explained that his primary concern was preventing Nigeria from sliding into a one-party state.
According to the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, the dwindling fortunes of his former platform left a major vacuum in the country’s political landscape. Instead of migrating to the ruling party like many of his contemporaries, Dickson chose the tougher path of helping to birth and nurture a fresh alternative. He noted that when the decision to establish the NDC was first made, very few people believed a new political movement could survive, let alone challenge the status quo.
Reflecting on the journey so far, the former governor expressed visible satisfaction at how rapidly the platform has evolved. He stated that what started as a modest political experiment has now transformed into a formidable opposition force capable of holding the government accountable. While dedicating his recent recognition to the everyday citizens, party leaders, and loyal supporters who believed in the vision from day one, Dickson maintained that safeguarding a vibrant multiparty democracy remains a non-negotiable task for the future of the nation.
