2026 World Cup: Millions Face Blackout Over Broadcast Rights Row

Zoyols News

Football enthusiasts across the globe are facing an unexpected hurdle as the 2026 World Cup draws near. With the tournament scheduled to kick off next month, millions of fans in the world’s two most populous nations, India and China, are still in the dark regarding whether they will be able to watch the games. A significant deadlock over broadcast rights has stalled progress, leaving the viewing experience for a massive portion of the global population in jeopardy.

In India, the situation has hit a stalemate. A joint venture between Reliance and Disney reportedly offered $20 million for the rights to air the 2026 World Cup. However, sources familiar with the matter informed Zoyols News that this figure is only a fraction of what FIFA is demanding. The global governing body for football found the offer unacceptable, leading to a breakdown in negotiations. To make matters worse, Sony also explored the possibility of a deal but ultimately decided against making a formal bid, leaving the Indian market without a confirmed broadcaster.

The uncertainty extends to China, where an official decision is yet to be reached. This is a particularly concerning development for FIFA, given China’s massive impact on the tournament’s reach. During the 2022 World Cup, Chinese viewers accounted for nearly 50% of all global viewing hours across digital and social platforms. Despite such high engagement levels in the past, no announcement has been made to secure the rights for the upcoming competition.

As it stands, the silence from major players remains deafening. FIFA has not provided an official comment on the situation, and the Reliance-Disney venture, headed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has also remained tight-lipped. Sony has similarly declined to offer further details. With the clock ticking down to the opening match, fans are left hoping for a last-minute breakthrough to ensure they don’t miss out on the world’s biggest sporting event.
