As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins to gather momentum, a prominent youth advocacy group, Cross River State Youth in Politics for Good Governance, has taken a proactive step by endorsing 14 candidates for various state and federal positions. The group is making a loud and clear call for political parties to prioritize competence and reliability over political connections during their upcoming primaries.
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday at the Ernest Bassey Press Center in Calabar, the group’s chairman, Jerry Odey, explained that these endorsements were not made lightly. The decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and community leaders across the state to identify individuals who truly represent the people’s interests.
The organization, which serves as an umbrella body for politically active young people across all party lines, believes that early intervention is necessary to shape the quality of leadership in the state. Odey emphasized that since the youth make up the largest voting bloc, it is essential for them to speak with a unified voice to ensure that only those with a proven track record of service make it onto the ballot.
There was also a stern warning issued to political parties regarding the imposition of unpopular candidates. The group made it clear that any party that forces a candidate on the electorate against their will should not expect the support of the younger generation. They stressed that their loyalty lies with candidates who have demonstrated excellence in leadership and community development rather than those merely riding on party machinery.
A major point of concern raised during the briefing was the continuous “recycling” of politicians in legislative offices. The youth leader criticized the trend of individuals holding onto seats in state and national assemblies for decades, arguing that such longevity stifles democratic growth and shuts out fresh ideas. The group is pushing for a shift that allows more young people to transition from political appointments into elected roles.
Among the notable names endorsed by the group are Oden Ewa for the Cross River Central Senatorial District and Godwin Offiono for the Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency. The list also includes Henry Dennis Bassey for Abi/Yakurr, Ijom Ukam for Akamkpa/Biase, and several others vying for seats in the State House of Assembly, such as Jennifer Usani Ibiang, Dan Obo Jr., and Thomas Aruku.
Moving forward, the group plans to intensify its engagement with political parties and other key stakeholders. The goal is to ensure that the 2027 elections provide a level playing field where women and young people can secure meaningful representation and help drive the state’s progress.
