The downturn was also reflected in the Nigerian Exchange Limited All Share Index, which fell by 0.97 per cent to close at 248,363.55 points, compared with 250,808.27 points in the previous week.
Market analysts said the performance reflected growing caution among investors following the strong rally recorded in the domestic equities market over the course of the year. With share prices rising significantly across several companies, some investors appeared more interested in securing their gains than taking on additional market risks.
The selling pressure affected key segments of the market, suggesting that investors are becoming more selective in their investment decisions as they assess current share prices and the prospects for further growth.
Despite the decline in market value, trading activity remained substantial during the week. Investors exchanged 2.715 billion shares worth N158.280 billion in 209,986 deals on the Exchange. This compared with 3.166 billion shares valued at N155.023 billion traded in 206,662 deals in the preceding week.
The Financial Services Industry dominated trading by volume, recording 2.005 billion shares worth N82.924 billion in 94,483 deals. The sector accounted for 73.84 per cent of the total trading volume and 52.39 per cent of the overall value of equities traded during the week.
The Consumer Goods Industry ranked second, with 152.345 million shares valued at N11.425 billion exchanged in 20,926 deals. The Information and Communications Technology industry followed in third place, recording a turnover of 117.296 million shares worth N15.256 billion in 22,556 deals.
Activity in the banking sector also featured prominently, with Access Holdings Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc emerging as the three most actively traded equities by volume. Together, the companies recorded 1.020 billion shares worth N50.520 billion in 29,382 deals, representing 37.56 per cent of total equity turnover volume and 31.92 per cent of its value.
Commenting on the market’s performance and outlook, analysts at Invest Data Consulting Limited said the latest decline showed that investors were becoming more selective as they reassessed stock valuations and the near term earnings prospects of listed companies.
According to the analysts, the market’s strong year to date performance has encouraged some investors to take profits, while the recent weakness suggests that fewer participants are willing to buy shares at increasingly high prices without carefully considering their growth potential.
They added that the short term outlook remained cautious as investors continued to secure gains and evaluate whether the rally could be sustained.
The analysts also warned that further declines in large cap stocks could place additional pressure on the All Share Index in the coming trading sessions, particularly if more stocks continue to record losses than gains.
For investors, the latest performance highlights the importance of monitoring company valuations, earnings prospects and broader market trends as the equities market adjusts following its strong run earlier in the year.
Market direction in the coming sessions will depend partly on investor appetite for equities, the performance of major listed companies and whether buying interest returns strongly enough to offset continued profit taking.
