Members of the Lagos chapter of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation later stepped into the matter, leading to the suspect being handed over to the Isheri Oshun Divisional Police Headquarters for investigation.
According to the foundation’s Executive Director, Harrison Gwamnishu, the suspect was taken into police custody, where his statement was recorded. He added that officers also visited Chisom at the hospital as part of the ongoing investigation.
Gwamnishu further revealed that a relative of Chisom’s father reached out to him with details about the family’s history. According to the relative, Chisom and her three siblings were taken away by members of their late mother’s family shortly after their mother died when Chisom was only seven years old.
He explained that the tragedy left Chisom’s father devastated, as he not only lost his wife but was also separated from his children. Since then, the family had no knowledge of Chisom’s whereabouts until a recent viral video brought her situation to public attention.
The relative also maintained that Chisom’s father was never informed of any marriage involving his daughter and had no knowledge of the man currently claiming to be her husband.
Gwamnishu assured that the foundation would continue to stand by the young woman while the police complete their investigation.
He described Chisom’s situation as deeply troubling, noting that she had endured significant trauma and now requires care, protection and emotional support rather than abandonment.
He also disclosed that the foundation’s Lagos State Director, Nta Amarachi Judith, is closely monitoring developments in the case as the organisation awaits the outcome of the police investigation.
