The National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE) announced on Tuesday that it is actively charting a rigorous path aimed at the complete elimination of cervical cancer as a public health concern across Nigeria.
The announcement was made in Abuja during a media briefing commemorating the International Day of Disease’s Elimination Programme. The Chairman of the task team, Professor Isaac Adewole, delivered the message, which was read on his behalf by Dr. Usman Waziri, the Director in charge of Cancer Prevention and Control (NICRAT) at the Federal Ministry of Health.
Professor Adewole’s statement highlighted the significant role Nigeria and its citizens have played in the broader worldwide efforts to tackle this disease.
The commemoration aligns with the date officially designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO): November 17th is recognized annually as World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day. This day serves to mark the launch of the global strategy intended to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer as a disease of public health significance.
The theme for the 2025 edition of the global day was a decisive call to action: “Act Now: Eliminate Cervical Cancer.” The NTF-CCE’s announcement underscores Nigeria’s commitment to translating this global call into tangible, local action, ensuring that the country meets the set international targets for disease eradication.
