The Federal Government has lauded the Super Eagles for their display at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing that Nigerians remain proud despite the team’s semi-final exit.
In a statement on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended the players for representing the country with dignity, resilience, and unwavering commitment throughout the tournament.
“Nigeria remains proud of you,” Idris said, highlighting the team’s character, teamwork, and determination even in defeat. He noted that the values displayed on the pitch mattered as much as the final score.
The minister described the green and white jersey as a symbol of courage, unity, and perseverance, adding that the Super Eagles reminded Nigerians that national pride extends beyond victories. “You showed that playing for the country is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Your effort throughout this tournament has earned respect and gratitude from Nigerians at home and abroad,” he stated.
Idris encouraged the team to stay united, learn from the experience, and return stronger for future competitions. “Hold your heads high, stay united, and come back stronger. Nigeria is grateful for the joy and hope you brought during this competition, and the nation stands with you, always,” he added.
The Super Eagles were eliminated on Wednesday after a 4–2 penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Morocco dominated much of the game, recording 16 shots to Nigeria’s two, but both sides were kept in check by remarkable goalkeeping from Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou.
Key attackers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman struggled to breach Morocco’s defence, ultimately allowing the hosts to advance to the final via penalties. Despite the exit, the Super Eagles’ performance reflected the resilience and pride that Nigerians continue to celebrate.
