Afrobeats Goes Global: Streams Explode by Over 5,000% in 5 Years

Zoyols

Nigeria’s music scene has officially shifted from a local powerhouse to a global phenomenon, and the latest data from Spotify tells a staggering story of this evolution. To mark its fifth year of operations in the country, the streaming giant released a report that highlights a cultural explosion, with Afrobeats leading a charge that shows no signs of slowing down.

Since the platform first touched down in Nigeria in February 2021, the growth has been nothing short of historic. On average, year-on-year listening has climbed by 163.5 percent, with the earliest years seeing massive, triple-digit surges. But the real headline is the 5,022 percent increase in Afrobeats streams recorded between 2021 and 2025. While Afrobeats remains the heartbeat of the industry, other sounds are carving out massive territories of their own. Amapiano leads the secondary pack with a mind-blowing 10,330 percent growth, followed closely by Gospel and Praise at nearly 5,500 percent. Hip-hop and R&B have also seen significant four-digit gains, proving that the Nigerian ear is becoming more diverse by the day.

One of the most fascinating shifts Reports observed in the data is the renewed pride in indigenous identity. Music performed in local languages is seeing a huge revival; indigenous-language streams within Nigeria jumped by 554 percent in 2024 alone. This isn’t just a local trend either—global listeners are catching on, with international streams of Nigerian indigenous songs rising by 141 percent in the same period. It’s clear that authentic, local storytelling is becoming a major export for the continent.

When it comes to the heavy hitters, the names dominating the speakers over the last half-decade shouldn’t come as a surprise. Asake, Wizkid, Seyi Vibez, Burna Boy, and Davido have solidified their positions as the most-streamed artists in the country. Their dominance is fueled by a young, tech-savvy audience with an average age of just 26. This demographic is deeply engaged in discovery, with the average listener streaming about 150 different artists and contributing to the creation of over 25 million personalized playlists.

As Spotify celebrates this milestone, the numbers reinforce what many have felt on the ground: Nigeria is no longer just a participant in the global music industry—it is one of its most influential engines. With over 1.4 billion hours of music streamed in 2025 alone, the country has firmly established itself as a world-class music powerhouse that continues to redefine the global soundscape.
