Team Akwa Ibom has officially announced its arrival as a powerhouse on the national sports stage after a spectacular performance at the seventh edition of the National Squash Championship in Abuja. The young athletes completely dominated the tournament, securing the top spot on the overall medal standings and bringing immense pride to their home state.
According to reports gathered by Zoyols News, the Akwa Ibom contingent put on a masterclass at the National Stadium in Abuja, walking away with an impressive haul of ten medals, which included five gold, two silver, and three bronze. This sweeping victory highlights the incredible talent emerging from the state and proves that recent efforts to develop sports at the grassroots level are yielding remarkable results.
Organized by the Squash Ex-Professional Players association, the championship gathered the finest young talents from across Nigeria. The junior athletes went head-to-head in intense matches across the Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, and Under-17 categories.
The Akwa Ibom team showed their class early on, particularly in the finals. They clinched five gold medals across multiple divisions, including the Under-11 Boys, Under-13 Boys, Under-13 Girls, Under-17 Boys, and Under-17 Girls. To push their lead even further, the players secured two silver medals in the Under-11 and Under-17 Boys categories, alongside three bronze medals in the Under-11 and Under-13 Girls events.
This total of ten medals placed them comfortably ahead of every other participating state. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the sheer competitiveness of the national tournament and the young age of the players who stood their ground against top-tier opponents.
The state was represented by a dedicated 14-member squad, consisting of eight boys and six girls. Under the guidance of coach Ibanga Etukudo, the players navigated the high-pressure tournament with tactical discipline and maturity. This success has instantly shone a bright light on the state’s squash program, offering a blueprint for how local sports initiatives can thrive.
Reacting to the historic outing, Engineer Iniobong Esuene, a board member of the Nigerian Squash Federation and Vice Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Squash Association, shared his excitement. He described the victory as a monumental milestone, noting that it had been a very long time since the state celebrated such a massive win on a national level. He proudly labeled the achievement as the greatest result in the history of squash for the state, emphasizing that it proves the immense potential waiting to be tapped within local communities.
The success in Abuja has already started opening doors for these young champions. In recognition of their outstanding skills, thirteen of the fourteen players have received official invitations to compete in two prestigious national tournaments later this year. They are set to represent the state at the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Tournament in Abeokuta, as well as the National Racquet Festival in Ibadan.
These upcoming events will give the players another platform to test their skills against Nigeria’s best, while gaining invaluable exposure. For the state squash association, these invitations are a clear sign that the national sports community is taking notice of their rising stars.
Ultimately, this triumph is a testament to what can happen when a state commits to nurturing young talent from the ground up. By focusing on junior players and providing them with proper coaching and competitive opportunities, Akwa Ibom is building a legacy. With more national tournaments on the horizon, these young athletes are well on their way to shaping the future of Nigerian squash.
