Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has called on his squad to raise their standards, stressing that only improved performances will steer the club back on track after a shaky start to the season.
The Portuguese coach has come under growing pressure following United’s disappointing run in the Premier League, where they have managed just two wins, a draw, and three defeats in their first six matches.
Speaking to Zoyols Blog, Amorim admitted that the team needs more fire and leadership on the pitch. While praising individuals like Matheus Cunha, he emphasized that United cannot rely on a few names alone to turn their fortunes around.
“We have players who’ve been here for years, but we are still struggling. That stays in your head,” Amorim said. “It’s not only about leaders — yes, we need them — but sometimes we’re missing those fearless, unpredictable characters.”
He pointed to Cunha as someone who embodies that spirit, describing him as “a player who doesn’t care who you are” and one willing to take risks with the ball. “This kind of energy is what we need,” he added.
Amorim also reflected on how United’s mentality tends to dip when results go against them. “Harry Maguire was captain, Bruno Fernandes too, both leaders for club and country. But you could sense that when things turned bad, we dropped our heads. That’s the past. We must focus on the future.”
